Teacher cannot remote control student computers in Sanako Study 1200 Autoscan

- Problem:
- The 1st video shows me unable to remote control a student PC from the Sanako Tutor/ Screensharing / Autoscan window, despite (audibly) clicking the mouse and typing on the keyboard.
- The 2nd video demonstrates another strange behavior: Not only can I not remote control the student PC – the Autoscan window keeps showing the same screen even after switching to the next student – although students all work on different texts, as is further evidenced by the thumbnail view of the whole classroom on the left.
- This photo was supposed to demonstrate another oddity: the teacher’s typing (instead of going to the student) flashing up in the upper left of the Autoscan window, between the “Monitor” button and the “Word” window frame – but I missed the right moment. Besides, it may be an additional complication due to the Office 2010 Japanese IME chosen here on both teacher and student. Or it may be the root of the problems (but including mouse? screen not updating)

- Additional Info: For what it is worth: here are the Sanako log files from
- Debugging:
- Can this be replicated with an IME other than Office 2010 Japanese (or any non-Western IM), on teacher and/or student? An actual student should be logged in (<- permissions issue?), preferably many (<- performance issue?). Update: No, could not be replicated yet using another keyboard than an East-Asian IME is involved – bug?

- With the help of your colleagues at the reception desk, sign up for your work schedule by sending meeting requests from NINERMAIL to lrcassistant@uncc.edu,
- Plug any holes/weaknesses in the schedule Reception Staffing
- Uf you have $2000 FWS, not more than 10 hours /week even if you start late.
- Final approval from LRC coordinator required.
- Whenever starting/leaving your shift, log in at the reception desk computer, allow all windows to open, then clock in by entering your code for checkin/out from the spreadsheet checkoutin.xls into the meeting request (series) on your NINERMAIL calendar.
- Read/listen to the training materials you received –
- Word (goo.gl/5hgr7Y) printout : contains a checklist for your responsibilities during your shift.
- PowerPoint:
- Deck (goo.gl/OV45aF) printout explains how to help with booking LRC equipment and rooms using NINERMAIL meeting requests (which will constitute e most of your work at the help desk).
- Video of training session: goo.gl/nWDDro.
- NOTE: After your first 2 weeks at work, there will be a Moodle quiz (TBA) that you need to pass!

Use Moodle 2 Forums’ Mail Now Option to speed up communication

- The “Mail Now” checkbox is still there, just the location has changed, compared with Moodle 1..9.:

- Even without “Mail Now” checked, your post goes immediately to the forum – but on the forum, you can still edit it (if you didn’t proof read etc.).
- Email, however, you cannot recall after sending it (well, MS-Exchange email you can, but not Moodle email). That’s why “Mail Now” tries to provide a safety net for emailed forum messages.
- That Forum messages are emailed (“notifications”) is a function of the subscription of users to a forum, which is (“force subscription”) the default, but can be changed in the forum settings.
- If you try to use the Moodle forum as a mailing list and/or real-time messaging system (like we do with the LRC Moodle as groupware for LRC staff), checking “Mail now” is recommended.
Don’t worry about uppercase letters when logging in to post an issue to the online Helpdesk

- The username input for our helpdesk system login is set to write uppercase letters, and this cannot be changed:

- Once you have made sure that your keyboard is indeed not set to uppercase (caps lock on, see light in upper right), which it most ikely is not, you can ignore the uppercasing, proceed as normal with entering your password.
- If you get a login error, it is not because of the uppercasing. Rather, you may have mistyped something else. A good strategy (when nobody is looking over your shoulder, that is) is to type your password somewhere else (word, notepad, google search box) where is it visible and copy/paste it onto the Password field.

For users not registered in AD as needing Accessibility this is distracting.

How to work around Saba Centra not starting by using attend in browser

- Symptom: When you click on your Saba Centra Event in Moodle, you get only a blank frame within Moodle.
- Workaround:
- On your Moodle course page, in the "Activities" block, click the "Centra Events" link.
- Click the "Attend in Browser/Download Recordings" link on top.
- A new window, My Schedule, opens and there are 4 tab across the top: Upcoming, Ongoing, Recordings, Past.
- You will need to check the Upcoming, Ongoing and Past tabs to find your session.
- Click the "Attend in Browser" link. If it works, this is what the result looks like:
- This is per advise from ITS/CTL. They are still looking for root cause and a permanent solution for this campus-wide issue.

How you can report and get help with non-LRC-related computer issues

- First try to talk to temporary and permanent staff in the LRC. However, Computer issues that cannot be resolved within the LRC need to be reported to ITS – unless they are already known issues.
- To make it easy for you to check for known campus-wide issues, I added the ITS alerts to the bottom right of the LRC homepage (
). Depending on when this feed was last updated (simply refreshing the LRC homepage may NOT update it), you may also have to click on the title of this section, “Campus-wide IT issues”, to view the most recent updates. - If you find out this way that need to report an issue to ITS, you can find ways to contact them in the upper right corner of my blog:
