“"Mira, mamá! Sin manos!". Can speech recognition tools be soundly applied for L2 speaking practice?” FLEAT VI, August 11-15 at Harvard University

Paper on use of “Speech recognition Tools for Oral Proficiency” training has appeared in this week’s FLTMag.com

  1. Since I have been asked to advertise this: Smiley
  2. image
    1. These Speech recognition tools, while an invaluable partial evaluation automation or AI tool, come free with MS-Windows (7 Enterprise/Ultimate, 8 all distributions) – crucial for often resource-strapped language learning environments.
    2. The tools do not come with pre-built exercises – a blessing in disguise since this makes them easier to integrate  them with your existing textbook-based syllabus. I provide some ideas how you can easily derive speech recognition exercises from your syllabus/textbooks.
  3. I recommend having a look at the entire new issue of FLTMag, the magazine on technology integration in the world language classroom, which
    1. examines other software that supports second language learning with video conferencing, support for writing and vocabulary learning (on tablets versus print materials) ,
    2. reviews a book on “Ideas for integrating technology in the classroom”
    3. and advertises upcoming conferences.  Hope to see you there.

Alter embed URL letter case to fix your broken MS-Office-file embeds in WordPress

  1. Problem: I just notice that a lot of my WordPress OneDrive embeds are broken (not sure since when).
  2. Root cause:
    1. Upon comparing the embed URLS in WordPress posts with what embed URLS sharing with OneDrive results in, it appears that the letter case in the embed URLs has been changed to all uppercase, pointing to resources that do not exist (doh!).
    2. Not sure who is to blame for altering the case:
      1. WordPress,
      2. OneDrive (note there is also the transition from “skydrive” to “onedrive”),
      3. Windows Live Writer? The latter hardly, since I did not touch these posts.
  3. Solution:
    1. Given that, while “cid=” seems all uppercase, “resid=” all lowercase, but “authkey=” is mixed case , there is not easy case change operation you could do locally to restore the original try.
    2. So you have to find the original files you embedded (not trivial from the URL which does not contain even a hint of the file name or extension) and re-embed it through sharing with OneDrive.

Stop ":Zone.Identifier:$DATA" files from being created…

  1. … by running gpedit.msc as admin and setting "user configuration / administrative templates / windows components/ attachment manager / "Do not preserve zone information in file attachments" to "Enabled         No. "
    1. I observed these files in the drive my virtualbox win 8.shares with the linux host.
    2. The answer is out there , of course,  just not with all the search terms. A more thorough security discussion is also available.
    3. Just seems not applicable to a share what virtualbox makes appear as a network folder to Windows while it really is not, which causes also other misleading security warnings also : image

Fun with Zotero inserting citations and bibliographies

  1. If you can install Zotero’s word processor add-ins (for LibreOffice Writer or MS-Word).:
      1. Here are the self-explanatory tool tips of the command buttons for the MS-Word add-in: zotero-ribbon-addins-command-buttons-tooltips
      2. Here is the add-in in action, inserting first one, than multiple citations, followed by generation of a bibliography:

  2. If you cannot, you can still use the “create bibliography from items” of Zotero (which itself can be run under portable  Firefox from a USB stick – no install needed at all). Here is a brief example and insert those into your writing; zotero-create-bibliography-from-item2clipboard2word
