How not to have to join a Saba Centra online class from the LRC late, for lack of speaking capabilities

  1. Problem: We continue getting reports from teachers that students who try to participate in a Saba Centra online class from the LRC listening station computers (with analogue headphones) experience a considerable delay in joining and cause disruption to online classes since they have to troubleshoot their microphones, for lack of being audible online.
  2. Root cause: Saba Centra on startup automatically selects the “microphone” as recording device…
  3. Workaround:
    1. On XP, click “Start”, click “Run”, type (without quotes) “SndVol32 –R” (meaning: “SoundVolume for Recording”), click “OK” which opens the volume mixer for recording  devices. The radio button selected will be “Rear input”. image
    2. Start Saba Centra.
    3. Switch back to the volume mixer you opened in step 1. Note that the radio button now selected is “Microphone”. This is wrong for the listening stations (and the teacher station) in the LRC.  Switch it back to “Rear input” (you know that your headset is supposed to be plugged into the rear). image
    4. And off you go…  Plus note: There is no need for “expensive” workarounds like:
      1. haphazardly trying to replug headphones,
      2. purchasing your own USB headphones,
      3. hogging the main classroom with its USB headphones.

Problem with Endnote and Word 2010 on Teacher computer

  1. errors abound when opening word:
  2. endnote-template-error
  3. word-endnote
  4. endnote-com-addin-disabling-by-admin
  5. workaround: disable endnot Add-inendnote-template-disable
  6. more errors when having recovered documents in the document template.
  7. Workaround: start MS-word in safe mode, clean the document recovery template.

How a teacher creates audio recordings for use with Sanako Student Voice Insert mode

    1. One of the Sanako Student player’s useful features  geared toward language learning activities, is that it can save the teacher the time and effort for inserting pauses into their audio recordings,  so that students can record responses into them.
      1. Meaning the teacher can just press the red speak button sanako-student-player-speakand record through the entire file in one sitting.
      2. The teacher can still help students finding their way around the file, especially where to insert their own audio recording responses, by adding aural cues.
        1. This can be done in minimal time: I once saw a teacher use a bicycle bell – and why not, if it saves time.
        2. A spoken instruction “Respond”/”Answer in 10 seconds” is not more difficult to spot (unless only the voice graph is being browsed) and might be even better.
        3. If you have spare time:
          1. You can post-edit the file with audacity, generating and inserting sinus tones.
          2. You can use the Sanako player to insert bookmarks instead of cues.
    2. As long as students have been instructed to how to use voice insert recording mode with the Sanako student recorder.
      1. This is for self access of students to teacher recorded files – be it during class or homework.
      2. If you want to record students under exam conditions, a similar insert recording feature is available within the activity: Model imitation, but not with a pre-recorded file, only when the live teacher is the program source students listen to for cues.

New Teacher MAC Computer in Coed037 with Final Cut Pro 3

  1. A new Mac Mini on the teacher podium was installed today in Coed037.mac-mini-rear
    1. Because of case size difference, the new Mac Mini had to be installed on the right side wall of the podium, unlike the old one which was smaller and fit on the keyboard tray.
    2. It is still switched through the podium as before: CIMG0059
    3. For logging in, use the generic, not your personal account.
    4. Standard current ITS MAC image.
  2. Final Cut Pro 3
    1. was installed into the image, and run.
    2. Media components (Audio content, Motion content) allegedly have also been included in this install.
  3. We also added MPEG Streamclip 1.9.2. Note, however, that the non-beta version does not have the YouTube.com download capability mentioned here earlier (you will get this error  more focused): CIMG0051
      1. Because of podium monitor incompatibility, we could not increase the screen resolution to the minimum 1280*800 required Final Cut Studio 3. CIMG0036We nevertheless were able to start Final Cut pro. You can permanently bypass this warning dialog if you see it, and report problems. CIMG0037-screen-resolution
  4. We also permanently bypassed this firewire error: CIMG0041
  5. And here is the result: CIMG0042
