How a teacher can use Sanako voice insert to easily add spoken comments to students’ Sanako oral proficiency exams- step–by step

  1. Requirements:
    1. you need access to the network share to open/save student recordings (this works in your office; I do not know whether there is technology supported on campus that this makes this work in your home office also,
    2. you need to have the free Sanako student recorder Lite installed, here is how: Just “Run” the above link.
    3. Recommended: in the student recorder, from menu: TBA, set your “default save directory” to the current folder with the student recordings – otherwise you have to change the save as dialogue back to this destination for each file you save.
    4. you UPDATE: DO NOT ANYMORE need to disable the voice graph (not compatible with voice-insert recording; you can, however show the voice graph again when done recording and reviewing the file)
    5. you need to save the student recording, updated with your comments, in the same folder with the same file name as the source (when “saving as” and choosing the name, preferably do not type it, but rather select or copy/paste it. The original file will still be preserved since your version will be saved in a a different format and therefore have a different file extension)
  2. TBA:you can rewind to listen, and re-record to overwrite comments that you want to revise

Sanako Light Recorder insert recording has no teacher track audio, but voice graph?

  1. UPDATE: We reinstalled and this time made sure we restarted the system, and voice-insert is working fine now.
  2. We are trying to introduce having teachers using the Sanako voice-insert feature to issue spoken feedback into student assessment recordings, since the Sanako Recorder makes voice-insert as easy as
    1. the (repeated) click of red “speak” button
    2. and a “save as” (default format MFF preferred).
  3. On a teacher computer, we recorded and saved as
    1. either MFF (fast for the teacher to save; we were hoping to have the students download the free Sanako light recorder to be able to play this format;
    2. or WMA.
  4. We tested playing back, and hear the student original audio recording, but could not hear the teacher insertion, no matter whether we tried
    1. in the Sanako light recorder
    2. or in Windows Media Player.
  5. Because of the proprietary formats, it is a bit difficult to troubleshoot this. Audacity won’t open either audio format.
  6. In the Sanako light recorder, we can see the audio inserted in the 2nd track (lower) in the voice graph: sanako light recorder no insert audio on 1 (2)sanako light recorder no insert audio on 1
  7. Is this a licensing restriction? No, even the free light recorder can do this. See here for the installation options to choose when running the studentrecorder.exe on the teacher computer.
  8. Investigating… Update:
    1. Must be demonstration effect, as voice insert works fine on my office computer, as expected and it had before.
    2. Will try the usual suspects when getting my hands on this computer again (refresh, restart, reinstall, replace hardware…)…

How a teacher can use Sanako voice insert to easily add spoken comments to students’ Sanako oral proficiency exams

  1. All other things equal (given a limited amount of time), teachers can provide more and better corrective feedback on student oral proficiency recordings if, during their grading, they could easily insert their own oral comments into the students’ recordings (delivered as MP3 files to teachers’ desktops after Sanako oral exams).
  2. Both the Sanako Tutor and Student Player have a voice insert mode that is much easier and quicker to use than (albeit not free as) editing the student audio in Audacity (which we still recommend for bare-bone viewing/listening because of Audacity’s capability of loading and displaying multiple tracks simultaneously).
  3. Fortunately, Sanako tutor/student player are available on the teacher/student station PCs in the LRC (the latter’s insert function is available when the PC connected to the running Sanako Tutor on the teacher station).
  4. How easy and fast is it to use this? As you can see in this demo screencast on how to use Sanako voice insert to add spoken comments into your students’ Sanako oral exams, voice insert only requires:
    1.  a click on the voice insert button in the center, whenever a user wants to speak during listening,
    2. and, from the top left menu, a “file”/ “save as” at the end.
  5. In a next step – not only during the grading process –, how easy is it to distribute student recordings made with Sanako to students? That is TBA:a different story.

  1. to load a file
    1. from Moodle:
      1. Find your assignment with the model audio file, presumably in your Moodle course.
      2. download the model audio file
      3. open the Sanako Student Recorder (introduction).
      4. go to menu: file / open, and open the file you downloaded
    2. from student recorder playlist: double-click the file.
  2. enable voice insert:
    1. To activate voice insert (which is a toggle that changes the behavior of the other buttons)
      1. either go to tools/ voice insert mode
      2. or click the voice insert button sanako-student-player-voice-insert (darker shade of brown = OFF; tooltip should say “Toggle Voice Insert OFF”, meaning: it is ON now)
  3. press the green play button to listen until you reach the point (your teacher may have inserted a pause or aural cue) where you can repeat  or respond.
  4. Then click the red speak-button sanako-student-player-speak to repeat after/respond to the source/teacher
  5. When you are done repeating/responding, press the green play-button.
  6. At the end, press the blue stop-button.
  7. Rewind and review your recording (e.g. compare your pronunciation with the teacher’s model).
  8. When done, click file / save as and save only your, the student track, as mp3 or wma.
  9. Additional notes:
    1. TBA: you can overwrite your pronunciation where you deem necessary.
    2. Fixed in Sanako 7: you cannot show the voice graph when in Voice insert mode – both are incompatible.

How a teacher creates audio recordings for use with Sanako Student Voice Insert mode

    1. One of the Sanako Student player’s useful features  geared toward language learning activities, is that it can save the teacher the time and effort for inserting pauses into their audio recordings,  so that students can record responses into them.
      1. Meaning the teacher can just press the red speak button sanako-student-player-speakand record through the entire file in one sitting.
      2. The teacher can still help students finding their way around the file, especially where to insert their own audio recording responses, by adding aural cues.
        1. This can be done in minimal time: I once saw a teacher use a bicycle bell – and why not, if it saves time.
        2. A spoken instruction “Respond”/”Answer in 10 seconds” is not more difficult to spot (unless only the voice graph is being browsed) and might be even better.
        3. If you have spare time: 
          1. You can post-edit the file with audacity, generating and inserting sinus tones.
          2. You can use the Sanako player to insert bookmarks instead of cues.
    2. As long as students have been instructed to how to use voice insert recording mode with the Sanako student recorder.
      1. This is for self access of students to teacher recorded files – be it during class or homework.
      2. If you want to record students under exam conditions, a similar insert recording feature is available within the activity: Model imitation, but not with a pre-recorded file, only when the live teacher is the program source students listen to for cues.
