How you can report and get help with non-LRC-related computer issues

  1. First try to talk to temporary and permanent staff in the LRC. However, Computer issues that cannot be resolved within the LRC need to be reported to ITS  – unless they are already known issues.
  2. To make it easy for you to check for known campus-wide issues, I added the ITS alerts to the bottom right of the LRC homepage (image). Depending on when this feed was last updated (simply refreshing the LRC homepage may NOT update it), you may also have to click on the title of this section, “Campus-wide IT issues”, to view the most recent updates.
  3. If you find out this way that need to report an issue to ITS, you can find ways to contact them in the upper right corner of my blog: image

Changes in how to make a meeting request to resource mailboxes after students’ mid-term upgrade to Office365

  1. Update: We made a brief summary which you can read instead here.
  2. The interface has changed quite a bit, but don’t worry: the basic processes are still the same. Here is a very quick rundown:
  3. You now have to start from the Calendar / + new Event, like so:image and image
  4. To add resources
    1. Don’t try the “button:add room”, you will get this error:  image
    2. instead, either type the resource email address  image
    3. or click the + next to “Attendees’image
      1. and search the database for the “LRC[whatever]” resource,
        1. note: no need for a new window anymore
      2. and by double-clicking or clicking the + , from the search results, add the desired resources to the “Attendees”, finally click top menu: “OK” image
      3. or to remove spurious  ”Attendees”, right-click them: image
    4. to preview the availability, you can still click top menu: “Scheduling assistant”.
      1. Note that the “Scheduling Assistant”looks very different, not like a parallel timeline, more like a parallel calendars, you can choose form thee upper right
        1. either day view: image
        2. or week view: image
    5. and it tries to help you by giving more explicit information about conflicts: image
    6. when happy with how you scheduled your “event”, click top menu: “send”
    7. read the response
      1. unfortunately, there seems to be no “toast” (tested in Chrome on Windows 7 and Firefox on Window XP)
      2. there is, however, still a response
        1. “accept”
        2. or,”with explanation, “declined”: imageimage
      3. there seems to be also a bug that you cannot send messages to yourself (huh? investigating), ignore for the time being: image
    8. from the  “Event” in your calendar, you can still
      1. edit (including, for repeating events, single occurrence or series : image
      2. right-click the “Event” from the calendar and choose “cancel”, which still brings up a popup window where you have to “send”: image

You can browse on the Group room PC to this folder with the

In the source files, new  vocabulary that the students have to learn, appears  in 2 forms

1.       Either under the heading “new words”, mostly with English meaning in a sparate column

2.       Or in the running text, colored in red (and with no entirely obvious English translation  for me who I do not speak Russian, but likely for you).

 

The target file is here  (in most browsers other than Internet Explorer 64-bit, you should be able to open this in EXCEL for easier editing).

 

We need Russian and English in 2 columns. The computer program we are going to feed these flash cards into is quite simple in its automatic evaluation. That’s why we need to enable students to guess exactly the Russian from the English flash card side (and vice versa). Hence we may need to simplify the entries in both.

 

To give a few examples: 

          Complicated lists of variants (inflected forms, similar phrases etc.) need to be broken up into separate rows

          linguistic metadata (like gender “fem.”– but maybe not articles: “la maison – das Haus” -, irregular verb) in a separate column, per language.

 

I included an example (from chapter 4, section 6) what I think the end result is supposed to look like:

Hint: the easiest way to get the vocabulary charts Russian – English from Word into 2 columns in Excel:  CTRL+H, “find:” space-space, “Replace”:^t (for tab), then copy/pasting the result makes 2 columns for Russian/English.

 

The Scheduling Assistant is simply multiple calendars displayed as parallel timelines for easier comparison

  1. We are all conversant in reading a daily – like here for the classroom-, weekly or monthly calendar sheet: image
  2. If you send a Meeting  request to the classroom to book it, the Scheduling Assistant displays exactly the same free/busy information  for the classroom.
    1. Same pattern of events as above: image
    2. Except that it is folded from a calendar into a timeline format (and in OWA does not display text explanatory beyond with what/whom the room is busy).
    3. This timeline format may be less familiar, but is much more practical to compare the availability for the multiple participants of a meeting.

“I can haz all my online appointment and schedule information in one merged calendar in NINERMAIL?”

  1. Yes, you can! Overlay calendars, a much needed feature from Outlook Desktop (as we mentioned earlier) has finally made it into the web version of Outlook (in Office365 the migration of which from live@edu will be finished by the end off the month), as was announced today: “Users can have multiple calendars in a merged view.”
  2. Example: In Outlook Desktop (not available to students), you can not only add a calendar like, icsexport.ics to the right, but, if you click on the (1) little black arrow, add/merge icsexport.ics to the (2) already overlaid calendars on the left, which is much more usable if you need to aggregate content from different sources: moodle2outlook-calendar
  3. And now also in OFFICE365 NINERMAIL:
  4. This should make the sharing of calendar information much easier,  not only for the about 100 LRC resource calendars, but also for other useful calendars that are published on campus:
    1. the new LCS calendar
    2. the registrar’s academic calendar
    3. the campus-wide faculty  calendar
    4. last not least: your Moodle calendar (view all your moodle assignment deadlines in one place, the same place you check your email)
    5. And more… ? Do you know of other calendars, and/or a way to discover them?

    1. yet need to be panned out. We assume the feature will “just work” like above in Outlook Desktop when you

      2. subscribe to a calendar.
