How to find out whether you have access to your classroom early (e.g. for setup tasks), by using the R25 calendar

  1. Go to, and follow these steps:
    1. (1) switch to view by “locations”  instead of (the default) “events”,
    2. (2) select your building,
    3. (3) find your classroom,
    4. (4) see whether it is blocked=booked before your class (hover over the block to see by what) –

  3. in order to browse to your classroom’s schedule – for example, you could also just (5) search for your classroom.

    1. no direct links to your room’s schedule;
    2. no simple flexible booking, even though there seems to be a need for one-time bookings (AFAIK, I did not venture behind the screen after top menu: “Reservation request” since I do not know how to answer its question).

How to workaround Moodle quiz audio not playing to the end in Respondus Lockdown Browser

  1. Problem:
    1. The Moodle 2 audio player image tends to get stuck (= does not play to end; not pictured) after you moved fast forward or backward on the timeline with your mouse.
    2. Respondus Lockdown browser has is a page refresh button, image but you cannot refresh the page since this might erase data you already inputted. .
  2. Workaround:
    1. At the bottom of the page, click image, or use the Quiz navigation imageto browse to another page.
    2. On the Submit page, click “Return to attempt”, or on another quiz page, use once more the “quiz navigation” to browse back. 219
    3. This seems to refresh the page, including the audio players, without erasing answers you already inputted.

How can I configure my PC to write in Arabic

  1. In Windows past XP, you can just choose – without first installing support for Right-to-left languages – by pressing +R, typing ïntl.cpl”, clicking ”OK”, clicking ”keyboards and languages”and “change keyboard”.
  2. An Arabic keyboard layout that is commonly preferred by Westerners (closer to the phonetic layout of the keyboard) is a separate download:

Don’t worry about uppercase letters when logging in to post an issue to the online Helpdesk

  1. The username input for our helpdesk system login is set to write uppercase letters, and this cannot be changed: image
  2. Once you have made sure that your keyboard is indeed not set to uppercase (caps lock on, see light in upper right), which it most ikely is not, you can ignore the uppercasing, proceed as normal with entering your password.
  3. If you get a login error, it is not because of the uppercasing. Rather, you may have mistyped something else. A good strategy (when nobody is looking over your shoulder, that is) is to type your password somewhere else (word, notepad, google search box) where is it visible and copy/paste it onto the Password field.

How you can report and get help with non-LRC-related computer issues

  1. First try to talk to temporary and permanent staff in the LRC. However, Computer issues that cannot be resolved within the LRC need to be reported to ITS  – unless they are already known issues.
  2. To make it easy for you to check for known campus-wide issues, I added the ITS alerts to the bottom right of the LRC homepage (image). Depending on when this feed was last updated (simply refreshing the LRC homepage may NOT update it), you may also have to click on the title of this section, “Campus-wide IT issues”, to view the most recent updates.

How to move an invisible window back onto the screen in Windows

  1. Normally you would drag the window by its title bar into its position with the mouse – but if the window is off the screen, the mouse cannot access it.
  2. Here is how to use the keyboard arrow-keys to do the same, after right-clicking the window’s task bar icon:

  4. This example is with our Sanako student (a bug or misconfiguration we are investigating), but works with most windows on most versions of MS-Windows.

How a teacher can start up the Sanako Study 1200 for her class

  1. The Sanako Tutor software starts automatically, when you log in on the teacher station in the LRC:  image
  2. Choose from “saved classes” what best you fits your class-size:
    1. “Both halfs” (still not the full classroom, due to lack of licenses),
    2. or, for small class sizes up to 16 computers, left or, preferably, right-half
  3. Students also need to log in, and class is not ready for the Sanako until all students show up as Student icons like the right me: image
    1. We can get there faster once we
      1. upgrade to faster computers
      2. fix that they manually have to choose their client
      3. have at least the teacher already log in from her office
    2. Hint: Log in yourself on a couple of student computers,  to have them ready for latecomers (easier to deal with them being logged in as you than if the class has to wait for 5-10 minutes).

    1. during your class’ first visit can play them this screencast introduction into Sanako digital audio lab procedures
    2. during later visits, you can refresh their knowledge of the basics in the digital audio lab with this slideshow.
