Sanako Study 1200 student in-class web browsing activity caveats, errors&glitches

- If we put the full URI of the website (e.g. http://www.dict.cc), we experience the student web browser not opening up (either hanging at "verifying access" dialogue or empty browser window and definitely no table of contents browser window). Workaround: put just e.g. http://www.dict.cc.
- CAVEAT: make sure you actually know which sub-pages will be loaded (and thus need to be allowable) during your web browsing activity
- the address-bar is misleading when a your pages are loaded within a frameset. like in this example:
. In this example, allow all links in the left menu. - your list of allowable pages should cover the entire workflow, including feedback pages that the student may receive
- TBA: it is sufficient for a web page to be allowed/blocked if its URL string contains your listed URL as a substring
- the address-bar is misleading when a your pages are loaded within a frameset. like in this example:
- We have observed `the following issues:
- that the sanako web browser may hang, on startup or later, but a common workaround is closing a hanging sanako web browser which will reopen it on the table of contents page.
- that the “verifying access rights” window can disappear quickly, but may delay web browsing for a considerable time before your students are allowed to browse to a web page – please allow time for that (we are investigating whether the size of the class or the type of allow/deny list or individual allow/deny links cause this delay).
- that the sanako web browser on some computers (despite them have identical software images?) arbitrarily opening new windows which muddies the waters considerably – and also seems to require more time for the verifying –, but does not make the exercise fail:

- On the listening stations, if you have the headsets plugged into the connectors on the rear of the computer, and hear no sound, you may have the volume set to too low.
- Go to (1) control panel, (2) icon:sound, (3) tab:audio, (4)button:volume
- in the mixer dialogue, (6) menu:options, make sure that all the (6) volume slider controls are checked, i.e. shown, click “OK”.

- Move the volume sliders up for WAVE and SW SYNTH

How to fix Canon Vixia “Cannot write on card” error when starting recording by initializing
2012/02/15

- To fix this error,
- go to: Menu / Function / Tools / Tab: / menu item: Initialize – choose the card slot A or B with the mal-formatted card.
- or view how to access the initializing procedure here TBA
- To avoid this problem: You may get this error after you the SD card has been formatted in another device but the camera (e.g. on your computer, using a memory card reader). If you are trying to delete footage, initialize the card within the camera instead. This page is taken from the Vixia manual, the full manual you can find linked in our list of bookable resources under Vixia.
Things you can try when having trouble playing video from the internet

There are several things you can try when having trouble playing video from the internet. I made a list here (less would be more, but hey, it’s computers, right?):
- Refresh the web page (f5 or ctrl-f5).
- Can you see an error message on the page itself? some video services prevent you from watching video abroad BBC iPlayer used to do this, since it is financed by fees of a local audience – so are ARD and ZDF, but they do not bother restricting by viewer location. However, they assume you are in Germany, and in their time zone, so they restrict you from watching the equivalent of R-rated content during daytime in Germany.
- Restart the web browser.
- Can your web browser play a video from a different website. Good candidates are Youtube.com (may be HTML5 delivered by now), hulu.com, ARD Mediathek if trying ZDF Mediathek or vice versa). Maybe your plug-in has crashed – try restarting your computer.
- Try a different web bowser (chrome, internet explorer, Firefox, safari, opera are all free downloads).
- Can you discern a notification bar on top of your web browser window telling you of an error or asking you to upgrade something?
- At this point it might be easier to come to the LRC and use what we maintain for you there, or, if you are trying to use your office computer, alter the helpdesk.
- Do you have to upgrade your video-plugin? Currently (before HTML5 delivered plug-in free video), most videos are plug-in based. search for adobe flash and MS-Silverlight upgrades.
- Do you have to upgrade your browser?
- Do you have to upgrade your operating system? your computer hardware? Let’s hope you do not get to here in this list…

Failure due to timeouts when capturing image from Symantec-Ghost

- do not thin I Have not seen that before: image capture starts successfully, but client times out in the middle; happens repeatedly both during the day and at night?

- What else to try?

- Solution/workaround: inconclusive. First try w/o Deepfreeze installed and with high compression worked. But third try without any changes had also finally succeeded (although deploying that image was not tested).
