How to terminate Sanako student.exe
2012/12/04

- Since I am getting search engine hits from the above query on my blog, a quick answer:
- You likely need to terminate the helper.exe in the process manager first, since this service restarts the student.exe, for the good reason that
- you do not want students to opt out of your Sanako class,
- and also in case of student.exe crashes.
- Now here is wondering why you want to terminate it….

ICS corruption in Moodle calendar events?

- I am seeing once again a large number of events loaded as internet calendar into MS-Outlook via an iCal link default to the same day:

- This time the iCal sources is Moodle, but it also displays the iCal feed internally so:

- I observed a similar issue when loading certain Drupal calendars into MS-Outlook, only that
- it seems to have affected only certain sites on the same (?) Drupal instance (is this user input error?)
- Events defaulted to the current day in MS-Outlook – the Moodle issue does not.
- All events were effected – not so in this Moodle issue.

Fall 2012 Faculty Workshop II: Clinic on creating teaching materials for use with the Sanako

- (Being planned and scheduled, therefore this post is a work in progress, please stay tuned: ).
- As a continuation (and practical application ) of our previous Intermediate Sanako Teaching Techniques Workshop (and a repetition of our Learning material creation Clinic from the summer), we will create learning materials.
- Bring some ideas and materials. The Sanako and entire LRC infrastructure aims to lower the technical authoring requirements.
- We can record remotely, all authoring teachers at the same time, your source (model/question material) which you will be able to distribute as easily (“ loop induction”) from the Sanako teacher station. Bring some questions your students should be able to respond to in L2, and be prepared to read some text that you want them to repeat, for pronunciation practive
- We can author hand-outs for so-called “homework” (actually reading and writing, with supervision and collection by the teacher as easy as the handout): It just takes opening one of our customized LRC MS-Word templates. I will hand out (more loop induction) “homework” files to aid your work. Bring some texts and essay writing tasks
- PowerPoint exam files with visual cues: bring some ideas for vocabulary quizzes.

How you can resolve Enterprise Library 5 Visual Studio 2012 error: "Could not locate the Enterprise Library binaries required to launch the configuration console"

- When right-clicking on my App.config to access the Enterprise Library configuration tool, I kept getting this error:
- after installing
- VS.net 2012;
- Enterprise library 5.0.414 through nuget (why does nuget install only this older version?);
- the unofficial Enterprise Library Extension vsix updated for VS.net 2012 published by the Enterprise Library team here.
-
What fixed this error for me was (YMMV, November 2012):
- installing Enterprise Library 5.0 optional update 1 (=5.0.515) using this approach:
- msiexec /i "Enterprise Library 5.0.msi" REINSTALLMODE=vomus REINSTALL=ALL
- – Adding to the vs.net 2012 SLN file, at the end of "Global" (immediately before "EndGlobal")
How to fix “no audio” on the computers with black Sanako headsets

- First, show the Sanako student application (e.g. from button:Start / Student).
- Is the Volume Control slider set to 0? Move it up where it says “Adjust volume”:

- Still hear no audio playing on the black Sanako headsets? Then the volume slider was likely moved to 0 since the headset was not detected: On the rear of the computer, check the connection
- of the blue headset plug into the USB extension cord, and
- of the extension cord into the rear of the computer.
How to start YouTube videos from the middle

- To avoid having to manually find a segment of a YouTube video clip during presentations, or worse, downloading the video clips from YouTube before the presentation, to edit them into shape,
- try using the “&t=”(for “time(line)”, I presume) query parameter, followed by “#m” (for minutes) and "##s” (for seconds) where the segment you want to show starts.
- Example links that you can try inserting into your PowerPoint Slide deck:
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDngRk5vImU starts the movie clip Aicha part 1/10 from the beginning;
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDngRk5vImU&t=1m10s starts Aicha at 1 minute and 10 seconds;
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDngRk5vImU&t=5m10s starts Aicha at 5 minutes and 10 seconds.
