How to run a microphone test before taking an ACTFL exam on languagetesting.com

  1. To avoid having your test recordings rejected for quality reasons (and having to take the entire test again), please run this simple microphone test OUTSIDE of languagetesting.com: 
    1. This microphone test can be run  either
      1. at the listening stations (see sign 433a, brown headsets) or
      2. (PREFERABLY) in the main classroom (see sign 434, black headsets).
    2. After logging in, put the headphones on. No need to re-plug anything.
    3. From the desktop, open Audacity  image.
    4. In Audacity, Press the red RECORD button image.
    5. Speak into the microphone.
    6. Check the results:
      1. You should see something like this: image
      2. Press the green PLAY button image and listen to your recording.
      3. Does the recording look AND sound OK?
        1. NO: let the LRC staff at the reception desk know the computer number and switch computers.
        2. Yes: Save the recording using menu: File / Export / [name = number of computer].mp3 to your “my documents” folder (if your test gets rejected, you have evidence that you ran the test and that the LRC headset hardware you used was o.k.).
  2. You also need to run the test WITHIN languagetesting.com (which just tests for volume, not for quality).

Upgrade to the Moodle 2 on the LRC reception desk computers is overdue…

Audacity on startup automatically selects the "microphone" as recording device…

  1. Which is a problem if we do not use the front microphone jack, but rather the rear input: CAM03119
  2. Seems to be still an issue on the Group computers….
  3. Solution is the same as found and documented for the listening stations in relation to problems students had with how Saba Centra handles audio hardware, disable  the front jack in mmsys.cpl of Windows7CAM03120

A checklist for our late hires in the LRC

  1. With the help of your colleagues at the reception desk, sign up for your work schedule by sending  meeting requests from NINERMAIL to lrcassistant@uncc.edu,
    1. Plug any holes/weaknesses in the schedule Reception Staffing
    2. Uf you have $2000 FWS, not more than 10 hours /week even if you start late.
    3. Final approval from LRC coordinator required.
  2. Whenever starting/leaving your shift, log in at the reception desk computer, allow all windows to open, then  clock in by entering your code for checkin/out from the spreadsheet checkoutin.xls  into the meeting request (series) on your NINERMAIL calendar.
  3. Read/listen to the training materials you received –
    1. Word (goo.gl/5hgr7Y) printout : contains a checklist for your responsibilities during your shift.
    2. PowerPoint:
      1. Deck (goo.gl/OV45aF) printout explains how to help with booking LRC equipment and rooms using NINERMAIL meeting requests (which will constitute e most of your work at the help desk).
      2. Video of training session: goo.gl/nWDDro.
    3. NOTE: After your first 2 weeks at work, there will be a Moodle quiz (TBA) that you need to pass!
  4. Questions?
    1. First and foremost, follow the instructions and helpful hints of your more senior colleagues at the reception desk.
    2. Bring further questions to the LRC coordinator or director.
    3. If no one is available for questions: post questions in the LRC Moodle Forum.

    Use Moodle 2 Forums’ Mail Now Option to speed up communication

    1. The “Mail Now” checkbox is still there, just the location has changed, compared with Moodle 1..9.: image
    2. Even without “Mail Now” checked, your post goes immediately to the forum – but on the forum, you can still edit it (if you didn’t proof read etc.).
    3. Email, however,  you cannot recall after sending it (well, MS-Exchange email you can, but not Moodle email). That’s why “Mail Now” tries to provide  a safety net for emailed forum messages.
    4. That Forum messages are emailed (“notifications”) is a function of the subscription of users to a forum, which is (“force subscription”) the default, but can be changed in the forum settings.
    5. If you try to use the Moodle forum as a mailing list and/or real-time messaging system (like we do with the LRC Moodle as groupware for LRC staff), checking “Mail now” is recommended.

    Some users cannot check out LRC items since they cannot log into their NINERMAIL Office365 Outlook

    2. This seems to have been going on for a while. We have no good way to use another browser on the computers that we use for our room booking and equipment circulation system. Besides,
      1. IE8 is the default browser on campus.
      2. Microsoft seems to say it not deprecate it without notice. Rather, pasted from http://community.office365.com/en-us/wikis/manage/office-365-and-internet-explorer-8.aspx states the following (they do not mention XP though, but that is also supported until April 2014):
        1. Why is Office 365 ending support for Internet Explorer 8? [in short, html5]
        2. Why 8 April 2014? Office 365 provides customers 12 months’ notice of disruptive change under our Online Services Support Lifecycle. We announced Office 365 is ending support for Internet Explorer 8 on the System Requirements Wiki on 9 April 2013.

        3. Will Internet Explorer 8 users be blocked from connecting to Office 365 after 8 April 2014? No, Office 365 will not deliberately block Internet Explorer 8 users from accessing the service after 8 April 2014. But after that date, users connecting to Outlook Web App will only be able to use Outlook Web App Light.

      3. ITS says Microsoft told them IE8 is not supported.
      4. The following change does not fix it here on XP SP3:
        1. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
