Study 1200 Pairing

In the Sanako Lab300, Group conference and Pairing were separate activities in the digital audio lab.

In the Sanako Study1200, pairing (and recording) students is an option under the discussion activity, as you can see here:

Hi. I noticed that you are looking for advice on the Sanako and/or Sony language labs. So are we!! We have had demos but are finding it hard to choose between the two of them. Have you had any feedback that you can share with us?

    Regards

After my inquiry on a language learning technology listserv which you may have seen, I indeed had a few personal communications. Mostly I had to rely on local testing and past experience. Each situation will be different.
It seemed interesting to me that certain entry-level versions of the SANS Sony Virtuoso, focusing on the audio features of the “language lab”, could possibly be married with one of the inexpensive non-language learning specific (but often audio-capable) classroom management systems (like NetOp School or NetSupport School).
However, we eventually opted for the Sanako Study 1200 ver 5.2.
We liked the friendly user interface and convenient integration of computer management with audio features which transcends the traditional “language lab”.
We also found (in what we managed to test) the audio quality improved over an earlier version/installation that I administered from 2006.
I would strongly recommend testing with actual software in your local environment – if issues arise later, it seems not always clear whether they should be attributed to Sanako software/headsets or local network/hardware. Sanako does provide a document with installation prerequisites.
Overall, the Sanako Study 1200 seemed a better fit in our situation even if we wish we could upgrade ASAP to the new ASL video recording feature which was originally announced for this summer.
(Greetings to London, the weather of which, contrary to my own earlier stereotype, I miss. Not so much the Brazil-sequel language technology adventures, are your “Techie’s Ten Commandments” available online?)
